Recently, SERCAP’s Housing Department assisted a low-income elderly woman living in Buckingham County, VA, to complete a substantial reconstruction of her home. The client had been living in a trailer with no indoor plumbing, no well, and no septic system, since 1982. She was referred to SERCAP for assistance with her indoor plumbing situation, by a fellow Buckingham County resident and former
SERCAP client. During the initial HQS (Housing Quality Standards) inspection, SERCAP’s Housing Rehabilitation Specialist found severe damage to her home’s structure, and determined that the trailer was no longer a safe place to live.

Quality Matters: How Erosion Affects Water Quality

A key element of SERCAP’s Mission is to provide access to safe, clean drinking water throughout the southeastern United States. Water quality plays a huge role in this; poor water quality is a direct cause of communities not having access to safe, clean water. And oftentimes, environmental factors are what lead to poor water quality. After many years of work, one failed referendum and 100’s of hours put in by volunteers and SERCAP staff, the Ellendale community faced a referendum on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Ellendale Civic and Community Improvement Association (ECCIA) worked diligently to distribute flyers – “VOTE YES on November 4” – putting out over 40 yard signs, making individual phone calls, and trying to call attention to the critical nature of this referendum. Members of the group also offered rides to the polls for anyone without transportation, and rides to the county seat of Georgetown for absentee voting, if they were unable to get to one of the two polling places on November 4, 2017.
